:: Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki was founded by Kassandros, king of Makedonia in 315BC who named it after the sister of Alexander the Great. In 324AD it was declared joint capital with Constantinople and thus acquires the Byzantine colour that it still has today. Owing to its art,intellect,commerce and economy it quickly developed into a cradle of culture and the center of the Balkanians.Since the beginning of the 19th century, Thessaloniki has expanded into an international commercial crossroads with a thriving European Community and intense social activity.

The port, the biggest in the Balkans,constitues a focal point for every branch of commerce and industry up to the present day. The annual international Trade Fair captures the interest of every visitor. .For all these reasons Thessaloniki was justifiably declared Cultural Capital of Europe in 1997.Through a 2003-year course time has left Thessaloniki rich in admirable monuments.Land marks are the White Tower, the church of St Dimitrios patron saint of the city, Eptapyrgio with its impressive castles that surround the city, the Byzantine Archeological Museum with opulent exhibits that date back to Thessaloniki's early years of founding,the imposing Arch of Galerius which stands in the busiest street in the center of the city, and many others.

Thessaloniki's historic seafront by the White Tower with its wonderful sunsets and the forest of Seix Sou which surrounds the city inviting walks among the pinewoods, justify Thessaloniki's title of Lady of Thermaiko's Gulf. The city's vibrant nightlife with its many intense rhythms that can be felt from one side of the city to the other, together with its wide variety of entertainment from gastronomy to singing and dancing enchants everyone until the early morning hours.

All these aspects of Thessaloniki surely do not leave any visitor unmoved.
