Nafpaktos

Nafpaktos, the second city in population in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania, is the economic, social and cultural center of the region of Nafpaktia. It is only a two hour drive from Athens, through Attica Road and Rio-Antirrio Bridge.

The history of Nafpaktos is lost in the depths of centuries.The threatening proliferation of the Turks, during the 16th century, their domination over the Aegean and the occupation of Cyprus obliged the Christian forces of the West to react decisively.
The Christian fleet, Admiral of which was the prince of Spain Don Juan, brother of the king of Spain, and the Ottoman fleet, whose Admiral was Mouezin Zante Ali Pasha, conducted an appalling naval battle on 7 October 1571, which went down in history as The Naval Battle of Nafpaktos. The Christian fleets victory was a milestone in the further course of the Western civilization.

It is believed that, in the ancient times, at the east side of the city, in Tsoukari, was the Askepeio, where a lot of ancient inscriptions were found, which have been brought out.

The castle, parts of it ware built on orlder walls from the pelasgic and ancient Greek era. In the castle you can admire the clock or Seraphim which it was built with the expenses payed by the Metropolitan of Nafpaktia and Evrytania, Seraphim Domboetis, in 1914, the ruins of the Vizier Mosque, the chapel of Ai Lias and the residence of Tzavelas.

The Beaches Of Nafpaktos

Nafpaktos: A visitor can go swimming at the two organized beaches of Nafpaktos (Gribovo and Psani), awarded with the European Unions blue flags, where lifeguards are emloyed. Eastern Beaches: Chiliadou, Parathalasso (Monastiraki), Skaloma, Marathias, Sergoula, Trizonia island (the only habitable island in the Korinthian Gulf).

Western Beaches: Antirrio, Makyneia, Riza, Kato Vasiliki.
