Location :::
Naxos is the biggest island of the Cyclades (428 km²) and lies on the eastern side of the group, with Paros at the West, Donussa at the east, Schinoussa and Koufonissia at the south while the north side faces Mykonos and Delos. The island can be reached by air from Athens and by ferry from Piraeus (103 nautical miles) and Rafina (on the east cast of Attica - 87 nautical miles), with large, modern passenger and car ferries. Some ferries go directly to the island and others make previous stops at Paros. There is regular - though not daily - sailings for the other Cycladic islands and for Herakleio in Crete. In the summer there are local sailings for the smaller islands of the Eastern Cyclades (Koufonissia, Iraklia and Donussa).

In Naxos, one can buy a variety of local products of top quality, such as fresh honey, oil, wine, olives "throubes", the local drink "raki", and the famous potatoes of Naxos. The island has an excellent dairy production, especially cheese products, such as "xinotiro", "anthotiro", "mizithra" and the famous local "Kefalotiri". The pastry-shops sell a variety of traditional sweets, as well as "citron" (sweet liquor). The island's souvenir shops sell thousands of folk art objects, clothes, woven fabrics and embroidery with beautiful designs and colours, as well as several other souvenirs.
Architecture :::
The architecture of Naxos does not follow the Cycladic model faithfully. It was built by a mechanic according to a specific plan unlike the rest of the Cyclades. Its houses fall into three categories: The mansions are mainly built inside the Castle and have marble sockets for the flagstaff in the front; the houses in Hora and the villages have stone staircases without parapets; the towers are in the countryside and combine elements of western and Cycladian architecture alike. Throughout history, the women of the island occupied themselves on the loom, making blankets, curtains and tablecloths with beautiful colours from natural dyes.
