As the main square for Athens business centre, Omonia sees a constant stream of people and cars 24 hours a day.

The bustling square does not really have any aesthetic quality itself, but is surrounded by shops, offices and many hotels.  It is a major station for metro, trolleys and buses and it is easy to travel to any part of Athens from there.
 
Omonia Square has become more cosmopolitan in the last few years, and down the side streets you may find a few Indian, Pakistani and Chinese businesses and restaurants. The kiosks of the square sell a multitude of foreign newspapers and magazines, and you are sure to find something in your language.

:: Around OMONOIA
With the multicultural Omonoia as a starting point, and walking up Stadiou Street, one reaches the Museum of the City of Athens and the Old Parliament, which today hosts the Historical Museum. On the opposite side of the street is the Bank of Greece.

Its monumental entrance is on El. Venizelou Street. On the other side of the street three neoclassical buildings predominate, the Academy, the University and the Library, as well as other buildings such as the Catholic Church of St Dionysius, the unusual building of the Opthalmic Clinic and the Iliou Melathron, the house of the German archaeologist Schliemann, which today is home to the Numismatic Museum. For a short break the best place is the cafeteria (closed and open-air) of the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Athens on Akadimias Street.

:: AKADIMIAS STREET
A typical example of the 19th-century neoclassical architecture, the imposing building of the Academy of Athens was founded in 1859 on the plans of the Danish architect Theophile Hansen and under the supervision of the German architect Ernst Ziller. The monumental building has the aspect of an amphiprostyle Ionian temple, with elements borrowed from the Erechtheion. Its sculpture decoration is particularly elaborate, themost dominant examples being the statues of Apollo and Athens on top of Ionian columns and the seated statues of Socrates and Plato. 
 
:: PANEPISTIMIOU (El. Venizelou) AVENUE
Panepistimiou avenue starts from the monumental entrance of the bank of Greece on Omonia. Other monumental buildings of Athens can be found on this street the Academy, the University and the Library, as well as other buildings such as the Catholic Church of St Dionysius, the unusual building of the Opthalmic Clinic and the Iliou Melathron, the house of the German archaeologist Schliemann, which today is home to the Numismatic Museum.
This avenue links Omonoia Square to Syntagma square. It is considered the most interesting road in the centre for a walk.
