MONASTIRAKI / PSYRRI / THISSIO
:: MONASTIRAKI
The area northwest of the Acropolis and Plaka is named Monastiraki, meaning 'little monastery'. The small narrow streets are mainly taken up by the flea market stalls that sell all sorts of souvenirs, jewelry, clothes, and anything else you can think of. Every Sunday there is an antique market in Avissinias Square, where merchants sell old furniture and bric-a-brac.
Just down Mitropoleos street you will find the 19th century Athens Cathedral and the road just south of the Cathedral (Pandhrossou) leads to the flea market. The flea market eventually leads to Monastiraki Square, which is bordered by many kebab and souvlaki restaurants, which are constantly full of locals and tourists alike.
